British Library Visit - Exploring Black British Literature Workshop
Students and staff participated in two workshops where students were able to engage with knowledge, history and examples of black British literature. They were exposed to a variety of books and were given the opportunity to explore the Treasures Gallery – this was amazing! We saw real examples from Shakespeare, Queen Victoria, Ghandi, The Magna Carta, The Beatles and a number of classic writers. We also saw the King’s Library which was very impressive.
The second workshop for Malorie Blackman was significantly impressive as this is the first exhibition celebrated at the British Library promoting a living writer (usually they are dead!). This was a selective and limited workshop so we were very luck to have the opportunity to be involved in this.
Students were given a variety of tasks and opportunities to get involved, demonstrate their existing knowledge in addition to gaining new knowledge – widening their horizons. They were given the time and space to share their own ‘voice’ and it was impressive to see what our students are capable of.
The visit enriched students’ cultural capital and exposed them to a variety of literature across Britain.
